It’s been about 12 years since Quentin Tarantino’s Kill BillVol.1 wowed us all. Yet, fans still flock to Gonpachi, a stylish izakaya that inspired the House of Blue Leaves, where The Bride (Uma Thurman) puts up the bloodiest fight against Japanese schoolgirl assassin Gogo Yubari and the Crazy 88s.
How do we know that they still do? Well, Team Takaski recently visited Gonpachi for the first time, and “12 years on: Gonpachi aka the Kill Bill restaurant today!” was one of the first things we overheard as we made our way into the world famous izakaya in Roppongi, Tokyo. Here is our super quick review on Gonpachi.
Gonpachi is truly an amazing place, as you can see in the photos above. But we were also pleasantly surprised that the izakaya is not just pretty – in fact they serve amazing traditional and modern washoku (Japanese cuisine), and what’s more, they are inexpensive for a world famous izakaya in the heart of Tokyo.
So they are one of the coolest looking restaurants in Tokyo (thumbs up 1), serve great food (thumbs up 2) and won’t damage your wallet too badly (thumbs up 3)!
There used to be a three-month waiting list, but apparently it’s not that bad today. But, make sure to book ahead if you are visiting on weekends or want to get a table in a particular section.
How to get there & what to do before dining
Get off at Roppongi Station on Tokyo Metro, and walk towards Roppongi Hills along the elevated express motorway known as shutoko. Gonpachi is located at the Nishi Azabu Intersection and at the corner between Route 246 and Gaien Nishi Dori).
Roppongi has a wide range of entertainment. Try visiting Roppongi Hills and/or Tokyo Midtown before dining at Gonpachi. Roppongi Hills’ Mori Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the city, is highly recommended for its cool museum and observation deck.
